Notes and links
Hi stranger! I'm Laust Johan Deleuran, a 26 year old webdesigner, front-end developer & Jack-Of-All-Trades.
I usually post my work over at http://ljd.dk, so this is just my space for short links, thoughts and notes. I'll try to keep most of it in English.

Designer vs. Developer prejudice
This concept requires collaboration between designers and developers to determine how to redistribute the elements.
I hate what this sentence indicates. In my opinion the sharp cleft between developers and designers is a totally untrue idea. And anyone who’s worked just a bit in the industry should know just a little bit of both world.
The other thing I hate about the sentence, is that it’s a given. Of course developing a site requires collaboration - didn’t you collaborate when doing sites before?
This sentence supposes that we don’t communicate, collaborate and diverge into each others fields of work. And if you don’t already do that, you might as well find another line of work.

Epic editor flamewars @ CopenhagenJS
I attended CopenhagenJS yesterday evening (which was hosted at 23video), and I actually thought it was a lot of fun, although very, very geeky.

Last night’s talk was about tools, libraries and editors (which resulted in a lot of Vim/Emacs/Textmate flamewars and a lot of bad-mouthing about Java in general), so not so much about coding as about processes, but interesting stuff none the less. And hey, 23video sponsored pizzas and beers, so what’s not to like?
If you’re anywhere near the Copenhagen area, I’d definitely recommend going next month. If nothing else, it’s great fun and an opportunity to connect with peers. And it’s free.
Edit: Oh, and by the way, do try to show up late, to make sure everybody knows who you are.

Once the water is deep enough that you must swim to stay afloat, does it really matter how deep the pool is?

E. B. White was amused to learn from a farmer friend that many electrified fences don’t have any current running through them. The cows apparently learn to stay away from them, and after that you don’t need the current. “Rise up, cows!” he wrote, “Take your liberty while despots snore!”
If you’re a hacker who has thought of one day starting a startup, there are probably two things keeping you from doing it. One is that you don’t know anything about business. The other is that you’re afraid of competition. Neither of these fences have any current in them.

The only person who cares how pretty your code is is you. Your users want fast UIs, your clients want reliable builds and you and your team want code that is easy to maintain 6 months and a dozen client mind-changes down the line.

The conclusion is hard to escape: Google — or people working on its behalf, with its knowledge and cooperation — took the numbers of tens of thousands of Kenyan businesses from Mocality’s database, then fraudulently solicited money from them by claiming to be in a joint venture with Mocality.

Personalizing Search
I hope it will eventually be like this: I want some some good Mexican. Oh look, John and Kevin both recommend La Cantina.1
Yeah, in some instances it would be (and is) really cool and useful. In others, it’s dangerous, creating a uniform experience with no challenges to your current views. Eli Pariser has a really good talk on the dangers of personalization on TED.

While there is mounting excitement about the mobile web, there is also a lack of understanding of the opportunities and constraints of the medium. The presence of HTML5 on many devices has only exacerbated this.
